Siting, Geospatial Analysis & Modeling
At Kleinschmidt we have been using advanced geospatial analysis to determine optimum site selection for marine renewable projects, including offshore wind and hydrokinetics. We have developed and are continuing to refine a geospatial decision support framework (DSS) that allows the incorporation of a wide array of publicly available site specific information on engineering, environmental and other marine spatial uses. The use of GIS tools is routine in this context, however at Kleinschmidt we can use this framework to process the raw data into more useful derived geospatial information, such as effective engineering cost, ecological density and diversity, and electrical transmission costs. This process allows easier identification of important factors that could affect development, leading to better informed decisions.
We believe that this detailed up-front screening to determine the best project sites is critical in order to avoid future problems and lead to a more defensible and easier to permit projects. We have also found that the geospatial analysis can be useful not only to make informed siting decision, but also from a stakeholder perspective. We have been able to analyze data and present it in an easy to relate format that can be used in stakeholder or agency meetings as a way of conveying the geographic concerns of the projects more successfully and accurately.
