Ben Cary, P.E., CFM
Hydraulics and Hydrology Engineering Section Manager
“I enjoy working on challenging water resource projects that require a multi-disciplinary approach to complete. My passion for water resources and river restoration are the drivers behind my career goals.”
Ben is a project engineer at Kleinschmidt, with over 6 years of experience. He specializes in 1D and 2D hydraulic modeling, hydrological engineering, dam breach analysis, and river restoration. He builds hydraulic models to simulate open channel flow through rivers to evaluate areas of inundation caused by potential flooding of dam breaches; conducts hydraulic calculations through pipes and over dams or other structures to develop stage discharge rating curves and gate capacities; and creates energy models to determine historic and potential generation based on potential facility upgrades or improvements.
Ben routinely uses HEC-RAS 1D Steady/Unsteady, HEC-RAS 2D, XP SWMM 2D, FLO 2D, and Arc GIS for modeling and to provide spatial reference and analysis. Some of his most recent assignments with Kleinschmidt include working on Hydraulic Modeling, Dam Decommissioning Analysis, and CLOMR Application; Hydrological Analysis; Flood Modeling; Hydraulic Analysis and Modeling of Proposed Changes to Reservoir Operations.
Ben has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Gonzaga University and is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and River Restoration Northwest (RRNW). He is an instructor in the Kleinschmidt HEC-RAS Webinar series and he is the co-creator of Full Momentum- an HEC-RAS Vodcast. Ben is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Oregon and a Certified Floodplain Manager.
