Multiple Opening Analysis
Did you know that if you have a bridge opening and one or more culverts at a single river crossing a Multiple Opening Analysis is required?
Chris Goodell and Ben Cary hosted their colleague, Robert Schomp, on Episode 29 of the Full Momentum Vodcast. Their discussion focused on the approach to modeling river restoration projects in 1D. It included some interesting discussions on the limitations of this approach, along with the limitations/advantages of doing the same analysis in 2D.
The biggest takeaway: So much of the HEC-RAS world is (rightfully) focused on the power of 2D hydraulic modeling that we sometimes neglect the advantages of 1D. More importantly, learning 1D hydraulic modeling is important for junior hydraulic engineering staff as they begin their careers and look to build a foundational knowledge of fluvial hydraulics. These concepts can be easier to teach in a 1D environment.
